The right to protest and manifest peacefully is a beautiful privilege we have in Portugal. We are allowed to have our voices heard. We want to show that it is possible to help develop these voices in the younger generation and not suppress them through the educational system. “Transmalhar” derives from the word “tresmalhar”, which means in Portuguese to lose direction and wander through the public space. This is therefore the name of the ongoing project on which this film is based. This project was developed on the island of São Miguel (Portugal), where groups of youngsters are challenged to think differently. Several activities were created based on crossdisciplinary practices to reflect upon the triad, self, body and space, the three chapters of the film. Thus, instigating critical thought and the will to change the status quo. We are taught to not take space, and not make ourselves noticed, especially the so-called minorities, but this film teaches you to do the opposite. The point is to occupy space and claim territory, defending your rights, while still respecting others. It teaches young and older generations to keep synergies between each other. This film makes these spaces in between visible through animation, where the will to make justice for our past, present and future is developed.
